Course Description: English III enhances previous language arts skills. This course assists in developing reading, writing and thinking skills necessary for success in life and or future college courses. The curriculum focuses on expressive, expository, argumentative and literary contexts with an emphasis on American Literature. Both reading and writing assignments offered are numerous and challenging. Students completing the course will be prepared to independently analyze poems, short stories, drama and novels.
Class Materials: Materials listed below are essential in class. Students will be asked to complete majority of work using a computer; therefore a disk is necessary to save all work. Other materials will be used on a daily basis in class.
1. Pen (blue or black ink) 3. Highlighter 5. 1 ½ binder
2. Colored pen (for editing) 4. Flash Drive
Notebook/Binder: Students are requested to maintain a compilation of their work as a record of their academic progress and as evidence for completion of assignments. The notebook is required in class on a daily basis and will be collected at various intervals throughout the year for inspection and will receive a grade. Students will also keep work pertaining to the Graduation Project. Forms, letters, research paper and lessons involving the project will be kept in the portfolio. Students will receive grades for maintaining the portfolio and completing assignments.
ACT: All high school juniors will take the ACT. There are several opportunities for students to take part in ACT study sessions. The test will be administered in March. Any student absent will take the ACT upon return to school.
Final Exam: The final exam for the course is created by the state. Students are not exempt from any state required exam.
Class Procedures
1. Always come to class prepared with the following materials. Laptops are necessary for class assignments.
2. Complete all assignments within the given time frame.
3. Be punctual and attend class regularly. Class begins when the warning bell rings. YOU ARE TARDY IF YOUR ARE NOT IN YOUR SEAT READY TO BEGIN WORK WHEN THE WARNING BELL RINGS.
4. If you are absent you are solely responsible for collecting and completing all of the missed work.
5. If you know in advance that you will not be able to attend class you must notify teacher ahead of time to collect assigned work.
6. Take care of all personal business before class (restroom, grooming, thirst, etc.) Passes will only be given in an emergency.
7. Putting your head down on the desk or sleeping in class is not allowed.
8. Use appropriate language in class.
9. Absolutely no eating, drinking, or chewing of gum in class.
10. Cell phone use is prohibited in class for it disrupts the learning environment. If a parent needs to contact a student immediately they should contact the school office.
Grading Procedures
Breakdown of Grades and Weights: Grading Scale: 10 point scale
Tests 40% A (90-100)
Quizzes 15% B (80-89)
Presentations 20% C (70-79)
Projects 15% D (60-69)
Classwork 10% F (0-59)
Final Exam: 20% of overall average for the semester
D. Remediation: Remediation is available for those students in need of additional course assistance. It is recommended that any student making below a 70 attend a SMART lunch tutorial session when available until the grade reaches an acceptable passing level. Appointments can be made with the instructor.
I am available for assistance before and after school if needed. Students must schedule an appointed time prior to meeting. No appointments can be made during my planning periods.
