Advanced Placement Literature and Composition is an intense course made to enable students to analyze classic and contemporary prose and poetry on a more collegiate and thought provoking level. The primary focus of this class will not be to solely identify literary elements in writing, but to identify, analyze, and explain the use of these devices in works of literature. Students will also incorporate ideas from literature into discussions dealing with historical events, beliefs, and values, while evaluating how all of these have helped mold and relate to modern society's structure and values. Students will then express their ideas in writing about the subject matter in various types of compositions. A major aspect of this course is learning how to effectively organize essays, how to critique one's own work, and then how to revise it in order to produce more academic papers.
Time management is crucial during this course. Students will be expected to keep up with assignment due dates, manage projects, design presentations and complete background readings and research at home. It is important for students to contact the teacher as soon as possible if they have issues with any aspect of the class. Being self-directed in learning, managing time, and taking responsibility for your actions is part of becoming an adult.
